The Christchurch and Highcliffe Brass Band rehearses at Burton Green Church Hall, in a comfortable room overlooking Burton Green, every Tuesday evening at 7.30pm.
The band was formed in 1907, when it was known as The Highcliffe Silver Band, based at Highcliffe Library. Since then, it has undergone several changes of name and venue.
Since moving to Burton from Highcliffe’s Rainbow School in January, 2013, we have been made most welcome by the Revd. Mark Meatcher and Church Secretary, Mandy Hibbert. We are getting to know the village and hope to become a valued part of Burton village life.
The C & H Brass Band has members aged between twelve and eighty-plus. Our players are all keen to provide the Christchurch area with a brass band to be proud of. Our musical director, Lawrence Butchart, is a fine musician and experienced conductor, who has played euphonium in the Scots Guards and in most of the best brass bands in the country. Under Lawrence’s baton, we are emerging from a period of transition. The music we play is broadly based: from show themes to film scores, from classical overtures and marches to jazz. Our audiences enjoy the accessible melodies and our players enjoy playing challenging arrangements more usually tackled by top section bands.
Our members are all working hard to improve their playing. For us, the important thing is to enjoy playing music and to give pleasure to our audiences.
In short, we are a friendly, sociable band. We have been through a period of change and are looking to expand our membership, improve our playing and provide a high quality brass band, integral to the Christchurch & Highcliffe area.
We welcome new members looking to explore the joy of playing music in a happy group. Many of our players have started playing in later life. If you are a beginner, young or old, we can teach you. If you are an experienced player, looking for a place in a great band, we would love to hear from you.
If you are organising an event and would like some traditional live English music, we would be delighted to offer our services.
